Just like when you learn to walk or run your neuromuscular system ‘learns’ to send out perfectly timed electrical impulses to your muscles. The neuromuscular learning process for any golfing technique is the same and can be
accelerated
with the right kind of training. By applying the secrets of neuromuscular learning you can improve the flow and fluidity of your technique, almost overnight. For a tee shot this means much longer and more powerful drives the very next time you play. But first you need to become familiar with the process of ‘myelination’.
What is ‘Myelination’ and it’s importance
Electrical stimulation and impulses are able to transfer more easily and much faster with something called Myelination. The myelin covers the connection between neurons that carry information in the brain. The myelin acts just like an electrical insulating layer covering axons of neurons in the brain. This provides a smoother flow of neural impulses and as a result increases the speed of neural transmission.
Although the existence of myelin was discovered by Louis Antoine in 1878 it is only now that scientists are really beginning to understand its importance to quickly master technically difficult sports like golf. Basically when you first learn a technique the electrical activity in the brain will be high. This is because there is no mental program and no myelination. You will therefore end up performing the technique more slowly and clumsily. With mental simulation training you short-cut the time it takes to build up myelination. The rapid build up of myelination means you can quickly programme, in weeks or days, your neuromuscular system to perform the technique that would previously have taken months or even years to master. You also train your body to perform the technique correctly, with more speed and fluidity.
The good news is that recent advancements in sports science have revealed incredibly simple ways where you can speed up the myelination process. Therefore massively speeding up the time it takes to master and ‘lock-in’ a powerful golf swing. However, before moving on to the training techniques you also need to know a bit about muscle memory.
What is Muscle memory
A technique becomes permanently ‘locked-in’ when the neural system can perform the motor skills without requiring conscious thought. Only when this happens can you say that you have fully mastered the technique. For tee shots you will be able to send the ball rocketing down the course without a second thought. You will no longer need to ‘think’ about performing you will just do it automatically and instinctively. This stage of learning and mastery it is often called implanting it into 'muscle memory'.
Ironically it is called muscle memory but your muscles don’t actually remember anything. All movements are controlled by the brain that sends out nerve signals to the muscles. It is your mind that remembers. In fact it is your subconscious mind that remembers. But for the process of consistency we’ll also call it muscle memory.
Muscle memory allows you to skilfully perform time and time again amazingly complex moves without having to think about it. On the other hand when beginners play they require higher levels of brain activity than skilled players. This is because their skills are undeveloped and the brain has to work harder. As you start out the process is “See-Think-Act”. But as you commit skills to muscle memory it becomes “See-Act”.
Implanting techniques into muscle memory is of course the stage of learning and mastery you need ‘short-cut’. Especially since the accuracy and skills of the technique also improve when locked into muscle memory. That is what the following learning techniques will reveal.
However, before you read on here is a word of warning. What you are about to discover are some very powerful secrets. It is important that from now onwards whenever you set out to learn a new technique you must learn it properly at the outset.
The thing that slows the development of many golfers is that they rush. In their haste they lock-in many ‘bad habits’. This then makes it extremely difficult to progress quickly because they have to first unlearn the ‘bad habits’ before they can begin to commit the proper technique to muscle memory...
